Its historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site, blends colonial buildings with beautiful churches and colorful buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you stroll through the streets, take note of the stunning architecture built from green quarry rock. One of the most impressive examples is the theater, Teatro Macedonio Alcal\u00e1. You&#8217;ll also find numerous churches and cathedrals, such as the impressive Santo Domingo Church, which is an iconic landmark in Oaxaca City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the beauty of Oaxaca doesn\u2019t end at the city limits. Nestled within the Central Valleys, Oaxaca City is surrounded by small pueblos within its mountainous landscapes as well as the impressive archaeological site of Monte Alb\u00e1n. It\u2019s also a great base to <a href=\"https:\/\/culturestraveled.com\/hierve-el-agua-oaxaca\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4636\">explore Hierve el Agua<\/a>, one of only two petrified waterfalls in the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mexico-city\">5. Mexico City<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A list of the best cities in Mexico isn&#8217;t complete without talking about its capital, Mexico City. Despite a population of over 25 million in the metropolitan area, Mexico City remains one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I love walking through the <a href=\"https:\/\/culturestraveled.com\/where-to-stay-in-mexico-city\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"69310\">neighborhoods in Mexico City<\/a>, many of which feel alive with grand trees, parks, and walkable areas.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You could easily spend an entire day exploring the green spaces and historic sites within <a href=\"https:\/\/culturestraveled.com\/chapultepec-park-mexico-city\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"69223\">Bosque de Chapultepec<\/a>, a sprawling city park that is just over twice the size of Central Park in New York City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cuidad de Mexico, or CDMX, is also a treasure trove for history lovers.&nbsp;The city is home to <a href=\"https:\/\/culturestraveled.com\/museums-in-mexico-city\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"68725\">fascinating museums<\/a> that showcase everything from art and anthropology to history and science. Many of the buildings are adorned with ornate balconies which creates a picturesque atmosphere in this coastal Mexican city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Campeche is another city in Mexico with a rich heritage. Its strategic location on the western shore of the Yucatan Peninsula allowed it to flourish during the Spanish colonial period, and this history can be felt in every corner of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Campeche also offers access to the nearby Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, home to diverse wildlife and some of the least visited <a href=\"https:\/\/culturestraveled.com\/mayan-ruins-yucatan-peninsula\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4136\">Mayan ruins in the Yucatan<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"queretaro\">10. Queretaro<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Queretaro is a big Mexican city with a well-preserved historic center that showcases its baroque architecture. In fact, during my multiple visits to Queretaro, the stunning architectural details are what stood out to me the most.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the buildings in Queretaro have been preserved to their original glory. And for a unique experience, spend a night at the cabanas at <a href=\"https:\/\/culturestraveled.com\/mirador-cuatro-palos-queretaro\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8168\">Cuatro Palos<\/a> in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve to wake up for the sunrise hike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">11. The <a href=\"https:\/\/culturestraveled.com\/monarch-butterfly-migration-mexico\/\">monarch butterfly sanctuaries<\/a>&nbsp;draw visitors to Michoac\u00e1n during the winter months when they migrate south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michoac\u00e1n is also known for its rich culture which is perhaps best seen during its <a href=\"https:\/\/culturestraveled.com\/patzcuaro-dia-de-muertos-michoacan\/\">Day of the Dead celebration<\/a>. The area to the west of the city is known for growing avocados and Volcan Paricut\u00edn, the only volcano in the world in which humans have witnessed its formation, eruption, and extinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mazatlan\">15. Cabo San Lucas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Cabo San Lucas is a renowned resort city located on the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. It\u2019s known for its breathtaking natural landscapes and luxurious beach resorts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along San Lucas Bay is a long stretch of pristine beach with crystal-clear waters called Playa El Medano. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And further south is Playa de los Amantes, a beach with incredible rock formations. Monterrey<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Monterrey is the capital city of the northern state of Nuevo Le\u00f3n, Mexico. Known for its modernity, thriving industry, and stunning mountains, Monterrey offers a unique blend of urban sophistication and natural beauty.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This modern Mexican city boasts impressive contemporary architecture, such as the Macroplaza, a long plaza filled with gardens and fountains, and surrounded by museums. And the southern edge of the city is bordered by Cumbres de Monterrey National Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you love large cities with beautiful nature, you\u2019ll definitely see why Monterrey is one of the top cities in Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Most Beautiful Towns in Mexico<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While I included a few small cities in Mexico above, I\u2019ve included a special section for the most beautiful towns in Mexico below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It just so happens that all of the small cities listed below are Pueblo M\u00e1gicos, a designation given to small towns in Mexico based on their cultural significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">18. Its history revolves around silver mining, earning it the nickname of &#8220;Mexico&#8217;s Silver Capital.&#8221; For me, the beauty of this small town in Mexico is as much about the surrounding nature as the town itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re an adventurer, you\u2019ll want to spend the day exploring Grutas de Cacahuamilpa, one of the largest cave systems in the world. Or if you\u2019re looking for a day of relaxation, take a day trip to Pozas Azules, a series of gorgeous blue pools located about an hour from Taxco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">19. P\u00e1tzcuaro, Michoac\u00e1n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Nestled in the highlands of Michoac\u00e1n, P\u00e1tzcuaro is one of the most enchanting towns in Mexico. While many visitors come on a day trip from Queretaro, I recommend staying one night so that you can climb the monolith early in the morning and spend the morning wandering through the streets of Bernal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">21. Its incredible presence can be felt throughout the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spirituality in Tepoztl\u00e1n seems to have a long history, beginning with the Aztecs who built the Tepozteco Pyramid perched on top of the mountain. In addition, this beautiful Mexican town is considered the birthplace of Quetzalcoatl, the Aztec feathered serpent god.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drinking mojitos on the weekends is more of a new phenomenon. I\u2019m not sure exactly how it started, but at some point, Mexicans from nearby Cuernavaca and Mexico City began visiting Tepoztl\u00e1n as a weekend getaway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless, Tepoztl\u00e1n has become a favorite destination for artists, writers, and those seeking tranquility. Although I also recommend hiking in the tiny town of Amatl\u00e1n de Quetzalc\u00f3atl located just down the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">25.
