We poured a cup of coffee, gathered near an outdoor heater, and watched in excitement as the crew began to inflate the balloons. One by one, they lifted off until the sky was dotted with color—a beautiful sight against the soft morning light. At first, we floated above open fields and clusters of homes, a reminder that this area is still very much alive with modern-day residents. Aside from the occasional roar of the flame, it was quiet. The kind of quiet that makes you take a deep breath and just take it all in.

As the valley woke beneath us, we drifted toward Teotihuacan. In the distance, dozens of other balloons floated toward the ancient city. And then on cue, Fly Me to the Moon by Frank Sinatra played through the speakers. Since climbing the pyramids is no longer allowed, this is the only way to really appreciate the scale and beauty of the site. Floating above the Pyramid of the Sun at sunrise gives you incredible views of the valley. It’s truly a bucket list experience.

What to Expect from the Hot Air Balloon in Mexico City

Without a doubt, the hot air balloon ride over Teotihuacan is a bucket list experience. There’s a surreal feeling of drifting high above the ancient city. The stillness, the shifting light, and the sheer scale of the pyramids below create a perspective you can’t fully grasp from the ground. It’s a moment of awe that lingers long after your feet are back on solid earth.

Let’s go over the details so that you know what to expect during the hot air balloon in Mexico City.

The Early Morning Start

It’s not every day that I willingly wake up before the sun, but when the reward is soaring over Teotihuacan in a hot air balloon at sunrise, I didn’t even think twice.
