It’s likely too late in the year to see flamingos in Celestun. This time of year they are in Rio Lagartos. But in the past few years, people have been seeing them all along the coast from Sisal through Telchac Puerto. I’m not sure if those areas are specific to a time of year. I’m not the biggest fan of Progreso. You might consider one of the other coastal towns instead, especially if you have your own car.

I’m going to Mérida next week (late April), do you think it’d be worth a trip to Celestun? I’d love to see the flamingos, otherwise would probably go to Progresso for the day trip instead. Thanks so much!

I didn’t notice any mosquitos when I visited at the end of October. Are you going because you want to see the flamingos? It won’t be peak season but there should still be some, and the other birds are just as beautiful!

Yes, the flamingos in Celestun are definitely worthy of adding to your Mexico bucket list! The whole Yucatan Peninsula is so easy and safe to travel around on your own.

It is interesting that the crustaceans and plankton they eat have given them this pink color!!! I am marking this place for my bucketlist and planning my trip soon! 🙂

Thank you! It really was one of my favorite things to do in Mexico. You may not see as many this time of year since they move to Rio Lagartos to nest in the Spring, but the mangroves are still full of birds and there will be some flamingos in the area. Enjoy!
